In The Beginning...Grade School
When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher, Miss White, talked to my parents at parent teacher's night. She told them she is noticing special artistic talents in their daughter. Other students would come to my desk during art practice to see what I was doing and go back to their desks to work on theirs. I was 10 years old and I don't know how my parents arranged it, but I soon began taking lessons from the art teacher and curator, Delwin Oliver "Del" Parson,, of the Springville Art Gallery. We, the students of Mr. Parson, all piled into his station wagon and drove over bumpy dirt roads to different places to paint. We learned to pencil sketch and oil paint using brushes. He taught by demonstration. I remember coming home really sick because I was allergic to the turpentine odor.
Junior High & High School
In Junior High you could take an elective like art, for example. for 1/2 year, but Mr. Parson arranged for me to have art for a full year. In 1953 Later that year, Del Parson left us to start the art department at Ricks College in Idaho, which was a sad day in my mind. I continued with the new art teacher, Stanley Birmingham, until graduation from HS. He had us making posters and other projects which were all very different...like calligraphy, etc. To be sure, it was as hard on him replacing Mr. Parson, as it was on us.
Adult years
I continued painting landscapes throughout my early adult years. But also, marriage, family, hairdressing, and international modeling occupied my time as well. All of that was definitely exciting times.
Painting with pallet knives
After having my children, a group of 5 ladies found a teacher in Kamas Utah who taught landscape painting using a palette knife. We drove the 45 miles every week to learn from Jo McGregor. Then I heard of Frank Erickson in Salt Lake City. I took what I had learned and started painting with him. He was an excellent teacher for mixing colors. I have also taken classes for water coloring and colored pencils. Each a fun challenge, but I kept reverting to my knives and oil paints. Consequently, most of my art work has been done with pallet knives. And it feels like I am painting the beauties of the earth with mental images transferred to canvas.
In all my years I have worked with:
Oliver Parson
Stanley Birmingham
Jo McGregor
Karen Christensen
Norma Forsberg
Frank Ericksen
as well as being influenced by artists worldwide from exhibits like the Luve in France, and museums in New York, Chicago, Milan Italy, Greece, and the wonderful gallery right in my own home town....Springville Art Gallery!
I use many different mediums, such as clay, acrylics and oils.. However, most of my work has been done using pallet knives and oil on canvas and boards.
